This undeveloped area of south Goa has a stunning stretch of coastline and beautiful backwaters that can be explored on a day trip south to Talpona and Galgibag beaches with their empty golden sands and simple beach shacks serving the catch of the day.
The area’s main town, Chaudi, is less than 15-minutes away, with a daily fish, fruit and vegetable market, supermarkets and pharmacies, banks & ATMs and a colourful Saturday market. The local railway station, Canacona, is also found here.
Activities & Sightseeing
You may want to do nothing more than swim in the sea, chill on a sunbed with a good book and relax with a cold beer at sunset – but there are plenty of activities to keep more active visitors entertained!
This area of south Goa is renowned for its yoga holidays, from daily yoga classes in Palolem and Columb, to yoga retreats and teacher training in Patnem and Agonda. Full ayurvedic treatments are available, along with relaxing massages after a long day on the beach!
There are a range of watersport opportunities, with kayaks available for hire on Palolem beach, and the bigger waves at Galgibag and Agonda ideal for boogie-boarding or surfing. To explore more of the beautiful coastline take a boat trip to Butterfly and Honeymoon beaches, venture up Talpona river with its atmospheric mangrove forests or go early morning dolphin spotting. Trekking, canyoning and waterfall trips are available at the nearby Cotigao wildlife sanctuary.
Venturing further afield, sightseeing trips can be arranged to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, the Mallikarjuna Shiva Temple, or some of Goa’s grand mansions and restored Palacios.
People looking to shop or party can head to the Wednesday flea market in Anjuna or the Saturday night market in Arpora, and enjoy the famous nightlife of north Goa.
And for history and architecture buffs, visit the UNESCO World Heritage churches in the abandoned 16th century capital Old Goa, and the colonial Latin Quarter in Panjim, Goa’s current first city.
